Can People Really Change? A quote from Muhammad Ali says, A man who views the world the same at fifty as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life. All people change when they go through different phases in their lives but not everyone learns from their mistakes. The play Fence, by August Wilson, is a story of a man, Troy, who faces many problems in his life but unfortunately never learns from his experiences. Troy slowly loses everyone in his life and then eventually dies from a heart attack. The story takes places in the 1957, when black people were still being mistreated. Troy is a big, stubborn black man who tries to break the racial barrier in his society, at work, and at the baseball field. Troy has a loving wife, Rose and two sons, Lyons and Cory. Lyons is Troy s first son from his previous marriage. However, Troy ends up killing a man while robbing him and gets sent to jail for fifteen years and that s where he meets his best friend, Bono. The two worked as garbage collectors. Troy was kicked out of the house at the age of fourteen but still couldn t manage to get his life together even till the very end. Troy is very capricious because he does not seem too concerned about his family or his job. I ain t worried about them firing me, say s Troy (1.1.).
